The LDC is a Statutory Body, our role is enshrined in legislation (NHS Act 1977 and Health & Social Care Act 2003).  We are a democratic body comprising of Birmingham dentists, elected by Birmingham dentists.

Birmingham LDC is a proud and very proactive LDC, a fact which has received national recognition.

We offer support and advice to our electorate and the running of our Committee is paid, in accordance with the law, by collection of the statutory levy from GDS Providers, GDS and PDS Performers, but not necessarily PDS Providers.  We do not represent fully private practitioners, or dentists who do not work in Birmingham.
ABOUT US
There is also an additional voluntary levy that practitioners can contribute to; this levy is used to help fund bodies like the British Dental Guild and the Dentists’ Health Support Trust.  The LDC also represents those colleagues working in the salaried services.

The LDC has an Executive made up of Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary and Treasurer, the total number of members on the committee is 20 with 10 positions up for election every 2 years.

LDC Meetings

Meetings are held every few months. We are happy to discuss any issues raised by dentists in the area and to take those issues to the PCTs.

Birmingham Local Dental Committee (LDC)

Birmingham Local Dental Committee (LDC) is a statutory body representing in the main General Dental Practitioners, (GDPs) based in the area.

Birmingham Local Dental Committee (LDC) is an independent body paid for by GDPs themselves via a compulsory Statutory Levy based on a specified amount per month. In addition, GDPs are asked to contribute to a Voluntary Levy, which is used to finance such bodies as the British Dental Guild and the Dentists Health Support Trust.

The main function of the Committee is to represent and support General Dental Practitioners (GDPs); to ensure that GDPs are properly valued, and their skills properly utilised; that, whilst serving the public, they are able to uphold appropriate standards of practice

Birmingham Local Dental Committee (LDC) has requested that we have an input in the future Health and Well Being Board (which will monitor matters locally in the new world) so that failings of the past 5 years are not repeated, so that where money has been directed for dental care of patients, it is used for that purpose alone, so that the patients of Birmingham get a better deal.

We put forward 11 of the 28 motions to Birmingham Local Dental Committee LDC conference on 10 th June 2011 (see article). We have constantly supported colleagues where we feel the PCT actions have been unfair, and on number of occasions, the Executive have made representation with very senior personnel at each of the PCT to help resolve matters.
